A BIG NEW SUNGRAZING COMET:
Astronomers are monitoring a new sungrazing comet discovered just a few days ago by the ATLAS survey. It appears to be unusually big, and could become a significant naked-eye object by the end of October. Experts say if it survives its close encounter with the sun--a big IF--it could rival Comet Lovejoy in 2011.
Provisionally designated "A11bP7I," the comet appears to be a relatively large sungrazer on course to become a naked-eye object in early November. Dennis Möller, Michael Jäger and Gerald Rhemann photographed the new discovery from Namibia.
