Sky Charts: Bright Comet Lovejoy
Friday, December 23 @ 15:00:00 Brunei Time (GMT+8) by hazarry (101 reads)
Breaking News
Seiichi Yoshida reported Comet Lovejoy (C/2011 W3) as "New Kreutz sungrazer comet discovered on the ground after 41-year blank since Comet C/1970 K1 (White-Ortiz-Bolelli). It approached nearly to the surface of the Sun on Dec. 16. It brightened much more rapidly than expected, and reached -4 mag or brighter at best. It looked amazing in the SOHO spacecraft images. The comet survived the perihelion passage, and it is showing the long tail again. It is appearing in the morning sky again in the Southern Hemisphere. It was observed on the ground as bright as -2.9 mag on Dec. 17 (Alexandre Amorim). It is bright as 1.1 mag still on Dec. 20 (Marco Goiato). In the morning sky, a bright long tail is visible from the horizon towards the sky. It will be observable in night sky in late December. Then it will be getting higher rapidly but fading rapidly."

Above: Picture-perfect Comet Lovejoy (C/2011 W3) hangs in the predawn sky over Mandurah Estuary near Perth, Australia. Photographer Colin Legg captured the comet and its reflection in a 13-second exposure with a 70-mm f/4 lens at ISO 3200. Colin Legg.

Hoping for very clear skies, local observers should look at the cosmic visitor in the morning sky before sunrise this week. The bright comet is currently hanging low in the Southeastern horizon from Brunei.

News: Full lunar eclipse wows astronomy buffs
Sunday, December 11 @ 08:00:00 Brunei Time (GMT+8) by hazarry (126 reads)
Brunei News
The Brunei Times - ENTHUSIASTS and curious onlookers alike gathered on the streets of the capital last night to witness a full lunar eclipse.

The focus of the gathering was at the "Mercu Dirgahayu 60" monument where the Brunei Astronomical Society and Survey Department had set up several viewing apparatuses for the public.

In addition to the telescopes, which were computerised to track the moon, a projector was also set up which was linked to a telescope to give the public a minute-by-minute movement of the moon as it was overshadowed by the earth.

Many people started to amass at the monument after 8pm when the eclipse began and it later peaked at 10pm when the moon turned red.

Large Sunspots Notice‎
Monday, August 01 @ 15:00:00 Brunei Time (GMT+8) by hazarry (442 reads)
Event AnnouncementBandar Seri Begawan - The current sun is increasingly active with larger sunspots and the number increasing. Local solar observers are encourage to look at these sunspots safely with solar filters within this few days (Warning: Do NOT look at the sun directly).

As it can be seen from the photograph below, the sunspots appeared dark but in fact they are not. They were just appear dark by contrast. These regions can reach between 1100 to 2500 degrees Celcius and cooler than the surrounding surface.

These spots were capable of producing X-class solar flares which can effectively damage the man-made communication satellites but also interestingly producing green auroras around the Earth's poles.

Sky Charts: First Sightings of New Moon Crescent 2011-2012 for Brunei
Saturday, July 30 @ 15:00:00 Brunei Time (GMT+8) by hazarry (586 reads)
Charts & GuideThe following table shows the dates of possible first sighting of new moon crescent (in Arabic known as hilal) for Brunei Darussalam.

Click Here for a list of the First Lunar Crescent Visibilty in Brunei 2011 - 2012

These dates are colour-coded based on the moon altitude at sunset and a crude prediction of the new moon sighting can be related as follow:

1. Red that indicates the moon altitude which is less than 2°. A very slim chance of visibility due to low altitude.

2. Orange that signifies the moon altitude between 2° and 5.5°. There is a slim chance of crescent visibility. However visibility might be improved with the use of optical aids and excellent atmospheric conditions.

3. Yellow that the moon is at altitude between 5.5° and 7.5°. There is a good chance that the crescent is visible to the naked eyes under excellent atmospheric conditions.

4. Green that shows the moon’s altitude is more than 7.5°. The lunar crescent is positioned reasonably high above the horizon making it easily visible to the naked eye.

News: Spectacular Geminids Visible from Brunei
Wednesday, December 15 @ 03:00:00 Brunei Time (GMT+8) by hazarry (672 reads)
Event Announcement
Bandar Seri Begawan - Today, in the early hours a few members of the Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam (PABD) were at the Bukit Agok, Tutong, to catch the annual meteor shower.

The meteor show peaks on 13/14 of December and astronomers said it would be the best meteor shower this year.

Above: Seen a very bright star, Sirius and constellation figure of a hunter, Orion.

Coincidently it was a moonless night so it will provide us a greater chance to view the shooting stars. But clouds were coming and going and mostly patching the sky. Despite of the cloudy morning, we were lucky as the view of the sky began to get clear around 1.45 am.

As soon as the sky cleared up, the excitement began as meteor streaked and some had left trails across the sky. It was the Geminids meteor shower and they were few bright slow meteors seen but mostly they were faint and fast. It was a brilliant display with rate count went up to 30 meteors in an hour.

Above: A camera set on a special equatorial mount.

Some of us tried to take photos of the meteor show, unluckily none of us managed to capture even though the view was perfectly in frame. I account this failure was due to the light pollution and certainly the camera set should be upgraded to use a very fast lens ( f/2.8 – 2).

About 3 am, the thunderstorm started to come in forcing us to end our observation.

meteorshowersonline.com - This is one of the best meteor showers of the year and never seems to disappoint observers.

This meteor shower gets the name "Geminids" because it appears to radiate from the constellation Gemini. An observer in the Northern Hemisphere can start seeing Geminid meteors as early as December 6, when one meteor every hour or so could be visible. During the next week, rates increase until a peak of 50-80 meteors per hour is attained on the night of December 13/14. The last Geminids are seen on December 18, when an observer might see a rate of one every hour or so.
