News: First Sightings of New Crescent 2008-09 for Brunei Tuesday, September 23 @ 07:43:59 Brunei Time (GMT+8) by hazarry (311 reads) | First sighting of the new crescent moon is used as the basis of various calendars to signal the start of the new month. For instance, Islam requires that the sighting of the the new crescent moon should be made with the naked eye.
Predicting the first sighting of the new crescent moon has been attempted since the time of the Babylonians. These ancient methods relied on the age of the Moon and the time difference between moonset and sunset. More modern methods use the angular separation of the Sun and Moon, the altitude difference between the Sun and Moon, their relative azimuths and the width of the crescent.
The following table shows the dates of possible first sighting of new moon crescent (in Arabic known as hilal) for Brunei Darussalam. These dates are colour-coded based on the moon altitude and a crude prediction of the new moon sighting can be related as follow:
1. Red that indicates the moon altitude which is less than 2°. A very slim chance of visibility due to low altitude.
2. Orange that signifies the moon altitude between 2° and 5.5°. There is a slim chance of crescent visibility. However visibility might be improved with the use of optical aids and excellent atmospheric conditions.
3. Yellow that the moon is at altitude between 5.5° and 7.5°. There is a good chance that the crescent is visible to the naked eyes under excellent atmospheric conditions.
4. Green that shows the moon’s altitude is more than 7.5°. The lunar crescent is positioned reasonably high above the horizon making it easily visible to the naked eye.

News: New Sunspot Tuesday, September 23 @ 03:53:44 Brunei Time (GMT+8) by hazarry (167 reads) | Above: A sunspot indicated by the arrow. SOHO.
Spaceweather.com - For the first time in months, a significant sunspot is emerging on the sun. It is a fast-growing active region with two dark cores, each larger than Earth. The magnetic polarity of the sunspot identifies it as a member of new Sunspot Cycle 24. Because the year 2008 has brought so many blank suns, some observers have wondered if we are ever going to climb out of the ongoing deep solar minimum. Today's new sunspot is an encouraging sign that the 11-year solar cycle is indeed progressing, albeit slowly.

News: ATV to Make Re Entry Sept 29 Friday, September 19 @ 09:31:52 Brunei Time (GMT+8) by hazarry (266 reads) | European Space Agency (ESA) - On 29 September the ATV will be put into a planned destructive trajectory into Earth’s atmosphere where it will break up and any remaining fragments will fall into an unpopulated area over the South Pacific Ocean. Deorbiting has to take many issues into account. These include having the deorbit boosts last less than 30 mins and the altitude during the intermediate orbits not being below 200 km so as to not degrade the solar arrays.

News: Aug 17 Lunar Eclipse Photos Wednesday, September 10 @ 19:52:59 Brunei Time (GMT+8) by hazarry (203 reads) | A successful observation of lunar eclipse was held on early Sunday morning, August 17, 2008 at the parking lot of the Survey Department, Berakas. About 100 astronomy enthusiasts gathered to observe the phenomenon. This observation was coordinated by the Astronomy Unit of the Survey Department.
Interesting photos of the eclipse obervation can be found at PABD's Gallery.
Here are some of the best images sent by local photographers and around the region.

Above: A photographic sequence of a partial lunar eclipse on August 17, 2008 taken at the first contact, when the moon just touches the umbra at 3:35 am, until maximum eclipse at 5:10 am from Bandar Seri Begawan. During the eclipse, the bright full moon slowly moves into the umbral shadow of the Earth producing a dark arched “bite” out of the edge of the moon. The next lunar eclipse visible from Brunei is predicted on January 1, 2010. Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam.

Sky Charts: Navigate to Your Favorite Planets Saturday, September 06 @ 21:31:08 Brunei Time (GMT+8) by hazarry (218 reads) | Do you know that one of the ways astronomers give the position of celestial objects is by specifying its altitude and its azimuth. This coordinate system is called the altazimuth system. This system is the most easiest to learn and especially useful if we need to explain to other observer where an object is in the sky at any particular moment. Of course we have other ways of describing the position such as by galactic and equatorial coordinates. But these systems need some imaginary lines on the celestial sphere. In the altazimuth, how high the object is known as the altitude which is equal to its angle above the horizon, in degrees. An object at the horizon would have an altitude of 0°, and an object directly overhead would have an altitude of 90°. While, the azimuth of an object is equal to its angle in the horizontal direction or the commonly known by the compass direction, with north at 0°, east at 90°, south at 180°, and west at 270°.
